GearEye uses passive RFID tags, and they stay dormant until they are powered by a magnetic field generated by a scanner. Then they start to emit their ID according to the special communication protocol EPC Gen2 (https://www.gs1.org/epcrfid/epc-rfid-uhf-air-interface-protocol/2-0-1)
